Are you a member of your local Chamber of Commerce?

I recently joined the local Chamber of Commerce. I had never been a member of any Chamber of Commerce previously and wasn’t sure what to expect. Our local Chamber of Commerce here in Glendive has monthly Friends in Business meetings which are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 AM. That in itself is difficult for my attendance as I have children getting ready to leave for school at that time.

Anyway, I was finally able to attend the Friends in Business meeting in August. The August Friends in Business meeting was rescheduled for the third Thursday this month due to the Dawson County Fair. Well, being this was my first meeting, I wanted to be early. I arrived at 7:23 AM and was the first one there. The Chamber secretary arrived next and then one other member. It turned out that no one could attend or had forgotten that the meeting had been rescheduled. The meeting consisted of the Chamber secretary, myself and one other member. To make a long story short, the meeting ended early and nothing was discussed since the attendance was so low that day. I understand that there are normally approximately only 10 members at each meeting anyway, which I find a very low number considering the number of members for our local Chamber of Commerce. I think that some of the reason is that the community I live in only has a population of approximately 4700. But I have to say I was very disappointed. We are new to this area and I had really hoped to give away more than 2 business cards that day. And the people I gave my business cards to were people I have previously met.

Anyway, I do hope to attend the next meeting but it depends upon my husband’s assistance in getting the children off to school on that particular day. His work schedule shouldn’t be a problem unless it changes between now and the next meeting. I am anxious to learn more about what the local Chamber of Commerce can do for my business and how I can get more involved in our new community. I will write a new post after the next meeting for those of you who are interested.
